Tan y Mynydd Trout Fishing Guide: A Long-Established North Wales Fishery

Tan-y-Mynydd – Welsh for “under the mountain” – is a long-established trout fishery set in the easily accessible North Wales countryside near Abergele, in the county of Conwy. It isn’t a Snowdonia venue – it sits closer to the North Wales coast, in Moelfre, a few minutes from Abergele – but it’s a genuinely well-regarded, immaculately kept fishery that’s built its reputation over more than five decades.

Over 50 Years in the Making

The fishery’s pools were first dug in 1971 and have matured naturally ever since, developing the rich aquatic life and natural food sources that produce strong, healthy trout. That maturity shows in the quality of the fishing – fish here test experienced anglers while remaining enjoyable and rewarding for beginners of all ages.

Five Pools, Two Approaches

Tan y Mynydd is built around five pools split into two distinct groups. Three dedicated fly-fishing-only pools each have their own character and technical challenges, and are fully stocked with a varied mix of rainbow, brown, blue, and tiger trout – giving genuine variety and progression through a season. Alongside these, two family-friendly pools allow multi-method fishing, including bait and fly, making them ideal for introducing newcomers, young anglers, and families to the sport without the fly-only restriction.

FlyRebel On Site

Based at the fishery is FlyRebel, a specialist offering carefully selected fly fishing tackle, premium fly tying materials, and its own merchandise, and an official stockist of leading brands chosen through genuine testing and time on the water – a proper tackle shop rather than a token counter.
