Liquid attractants – fish oils, glugs, and dips – are used across UK fishing to boost the scent signal of an existing bait rather than as a bait themselves. Used well, they meaningfully improve results; used carelessly, they can just as easily put fish off.
Oil-Based vs Water-Based Attractants
Oil-based liquids disperse slowly through water, creating a longer-lasting scent trail that particularly suits cold water (where natural dispersal is slower anyway) and longer-range fishing where you need a signal that reaches further and lasts longer between recasts.
Water-based attractants disperse quickly, giving an immediate, strong signal that suits close-range work and warmer water where things move and disperse faster naturally. Neither is universally “better” – match the type to the conditions.
Where to Use Them
Hookbait dips and glugs – dunking or spraying a hookbait (boilie, pellet, particle) just before casting gives an immediate scent boost on entry.
Groundbait and particle mixes – a measured dose mixed through groundbait or particles before introduction adds a scent layer to the whole feeding area, not just the hookbait.
PVA bags and sticks – liquid can be added to the contents of a PVA bag before it’s cast, dispersing as the bag dissolves and creating a concentrated scent cloud right around the hookbait.
The Overdosing Trap
More is not always better. Particularly on pressured, well-fished waters, an unnaturally strong scent can act as a warning sign to wary fish rather than an attraction – many experienced anglers deliberately under-dose relative to the bottle’s instructions, especially on hard day-ticket venues. Start light and increase only if it’s clearly not producing.
