Pike fishing bait choice splits into three real categories: deadbait, livebait (where legally and locally permitted), and lures. Each has genuine strengths depending on conditions, season, and the specific water.
Deadbaits
Sea fish deadbaits – mackerel, herring, sardine, and smelt – are the most widely used and consistently effective pike baits in the UK. Their oily flesh releases a strong scent trail that pike can track from distance, particularly valuable in coloured water or at night. Freshwater deadbaits like roach also work well and can outperform sea fish on waters where pike see fewer of them.
Mackerel in particular has a long-standing reputation as one of the most reliable all-round pike deadbaits, thanks to its strong oil content and widespread availability.
Livebait
Live baiting for pike is legal in England and Wales under specific rules – critically, live fish must never be transferred between different waters, to prevent spreading disease and invasive species. Many individual fisheries prohibit live baiting entirely regardless of the general legal position, so always check specific water rules before considering it.
Where permitted, livebait can outproduce deadbait in certain conditions, particularly for pike keyed into actively hunting live prey rather than scavenging.
Lures
Modern lure fishing for pike – spinnerbaits, soft plastics, jerkbaits, and crankbaits – lets an angler actively search water rather than waiting for a fish to find a static bait. This suits warmer water and more active pike, and increasingly it’s the default approach for many UK pike anglers, particularly outside deep winter.
Matching Bait to Season
Cold winter water tends to favour static deadbaiting, since pike become less willing to actively chase a moving lure but will still scavenge a well-placed scent-releasing deadbait. Warmer water through spring, summer, and autumn tends to suit lure fishing better, when pike are more actively hunting and responsive to movement and reaction triggers.
