Over enough seasons, a pattern emerges in which conditions consistently produce my best UK fishing, and I now genuinely plan sessions around it rather than just fishing whenever I have free time.
Dawn and dusk remain the most consistent windows across almost every species I target, particularly predators – reduced disturbance and comfortable temperatures combine to make these the reliable low-light peaks.
A slowly falling barometer, in the hours before an approaching front actually arrives, has produced some of my best sessions – fish seem to feed harder in anticipation of the change before conditions properly deteriorate.
Overcast, mild, and slightly breezy beats flat calm bright sun for most of my coarse fishing – the broken surface and reduced visibility of the angler seem to encourage more confident feeding than a bright, still day.
Autumn, for me, is the strongest all-round season – cooling water triggers pre-winter feeding across coarse fish, predators, and game species alike, and it’s the season I’d choose if I could only fish one time of year.
None of this guarantees a catch on any given day, but stacking dawn or dusk, a falling barometer, and mild overcast autumn conditions gives you as many favourable factors in your corner as UK fishing conditions allow. It’s become the framework I actually plan trips around now, rather than just going whenever I’m free.

Rob Hadley grew up fishing the rivers and drains of the Norfolk Broads, and it was inevitable that pike would become his species of choice. He’s been targeting predators seriously for over 20 years – starting on dead baits, moving through live bait rigs, and eventually landing on lure fishing as his preferred method about eight years ago.
These days he fishes the Broads through winter, travels to Chew Valley Lake each spring for its outsized fish, and spends the warmer months working soft plastics on rivers across the East Midlands for perch and zander. He’s had pike to 31lb and perch to 3lb 9oz, and reckons both records are beatable on the right day with the right set-up.
At The River Bend, Rob writes the predator species guides, lure fishing technique articles, and most of the winter fishing content.
