Llyn Brenig Trout Fishing Guide: North Wales’ Premier Stillwater

Llyn Brenig sits high in the Denbighshire hills on the North Wales/Conwy border, and it has one of the strongest reputations of any stillwater trout fishery in the UK, not just in Wales. With roughly 14 miles (23km) of accessible shoreline and a genuinely large body of water, it offers both bank and boat fishing across a variety of drifts and features that suit beginners and competition-standard anglers alike.

The fishery is stocked with rainbow trout and holds a good head of brown trout too, with fish regularly caught well into double figures during the season. Brenig has hosted national and international fly fishing competitions over the years, which says as much about the quality and consistency of its fishing as anything else could.

The Visitor Centre

Brenig’s visitor centre is a genuine part of what makes it worth the trip even beyond the fishing itself – a café, a well-stocked fishing shop for tackle and permits, and full facilities make it an easy day out rather than just a fishing venue. Full permit types, boat hire, and current prices are available directly from Llyn Brenig’s official website.

What to Expect

Brenig fishes well across the season from March/April through into autumn, with fly fishing the dominant method – both bank fishing from a wide range of accessible platforms and drifting from a boat across open water. Streamers and lures work well early and late season when fish are higher in the water; smaller nymphs and dries come into their own as the season warms.

If you’re new to stillwater trout fishing, our guides on rainbow trout and spinning for trout cover the basics that apply here, alongside fly tactics if you’re bringing a fly rod for the first time.

Getting There

Llyn Brenig is easily reached from the A5 between Betws-y-Coed and Corwen, making it a practical stop for anglers travelling across North Wales. It sits within easy reach of other North Wales trout waters covered in this series, including Tan y Mynydd and Llyn Crafnant.
