PowerBait is a moulded, scented dough bait originally developed in the US for stocked trout fishing, and it has found a genuine niche on UK day-ticket stillwaters that permit bait fishing for trout. It is not relevant to fly-only reservoirs, but on the right water it is a highly effective, low-skill-barrier bait.

What PowerBait Is
PowerBait is a soft, buoyant dough-like bait, heavily scented and available in bright colours (chartreuse, orange, pink, and natural tones). Its buoyancy is the key feature – it floats a hookbait up off the bottom, keeping it in a stocked trout’s natural feeding zone rather than lying on the bottom where trout are less likely to find it by sight.
Where It Is Permitted
Check the specific fishery rules before using it. Many premium UK stillwater trout fisheries (Rutland Water, Grafham Water, and similar reservoirs) are fly-only and do not permit any bait fishing. PowerBait applies specifically to the smaller day-ticket stillwaters that stock trout for bait and lure fishing as well as fly.
How to Rig It
Mould a small ball (pea to grape-sized) around a size 8-12 single hook or small treble, leaving the point exposed. Fish it on a simple running ledger or link leger setup with light line, allowing the bait’s buoyancy to lift it a few inches to a foot off the bottom – trailing enough leader length matters more than any other part of the rig.
Presentation Tips
Cast out and leave the rig still – PowerBait is not an active-retrieve bait, it works by sitting in place and relying on scent dispersal and buoyant visibility to draw trout in. Patience matters more than frequent recasting; give a swim at least 20-30 minutes before moving.
Alternatives and Combinations
Sweetcorn, bread paste, and cheese paste all work on the same principle of scent and visibility for stocked trout, and can be used interchangeably with PowerBait depending on what a specific fishery permits or what is producing on the day. See our float fishing for trout guide for how to combine bait choice with float presentation.
