This only applies where bait fishing for trout is actually permitted – many premium reservoirs are fly-only, and I want to be upfront about that before ranking anything. On the day-ticket stillwaters where bait is allowed, here’s my honest take on what works.
Sweetcorn is my top pick, consistently. Bright, cheap, and simple to present under a float or light ledger – it stands out clearly against a stillwater bottom and rarely lets me down on the waters where I’ve used it.
Worm comes a close second, particularly on rivers and less heavily-stocked stillwaters where a more natural presentation seems to outperform the bright, obviously artificial look of corn or paste.
Bread flake and simple paste are reliable, inexpensive options I keep coming back to, especially when I want something dependable without needing a specific purchase.
PowerBait and moulded trout pastes have their place too – purpose-built for exactly this kind of stocked fishery, and genuinely effective when a fishery’s trout are used to seeing it.
Where a specific fishery stocks trout on a known pellet, matching your hookbait to that exact pellet consistently outproduces every other option on my list, simply because the fish are already conditioned to associate it with food.
My honest ranking, if I had to choose just one: sweetcorn, every time, unless I know a specific fishery’s stock is pellet-conditioned, in which case I’ll match that instead.
